Sutton Lake ~ Sutton WV

Sutton Lake in West Virginia covers over 1,400 acres. Sutton Lake is 125 feet deep at the dam located in the Town of Sutton WV. It is about 100 miles above Charleston WV in Braxton County WV. Sutton Dam is a concrete, gravity structure 210-feet high, 1178 fee long, and 195 feet wide at the base of the dam. Sutton Dam was built to control flooding on the Elk River, Kanawha River, and the Ohio River. Sutton Dam's construction was completed in 1961 with a price tag over $35 million dollars. The Sutton Lake project was authorized by Congress in the Flood Control Act of 1938. Construction began in October 1949, but was interrupted by the Korean War. Work restarted in 1956 and in the dam was finally completed in 1961. Sutton Dam is still operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Sutton Lake and the adjoining Elk River Wildlife Management Area offers visitors over 20,000 acres of forests and fields, and 1,440 acres of water for boating and biking, swimming and skiing, hiking and hunting, fishing and frolicking, resting and relaxing.

Wildlife is abundant and fish are plentiful! Local attractions include a riding stable, canoe livery, outlet mall, and a bowling alley. Sutton Lake is visited year after year by campers from all over the US. Campers can choose from Gerald R. Freeman Campground, Bakers Run Campground, and Bee Run Campground.

Gerald R. Freeman Campground on Sutton Lake has 159 camping sites. It facilities include heated showers, dump stations, water fountains, playgrounds, boating launch ramps and some electric hook-ups. Visit Gerald R. Freeman Campground's website by Clicking Here. Pets are permitted in the campground, but they must be controlled/ restricted by the owner on a leash no longer than six feet. State law requires children 14 and under to wear a helmet while riding bicycles. For safety, lights must be operated on bicycles from sunset to sunrise.

Bakers Run Campground on Sutton Lake has 79 camping sites. It facilities include heated showers, dump stations, water fountains, playgrounds, boating launch ramps and some electric hook-ups.
